[THIS PAPER is CONCERNED with a study of memory in the light of Pavlov’s teaching on higher nervous activity. In the opening section the author argues that Pavlov did not deny the importance of purpose or intention in behaviour; what he did stress was the need to study the mechanism of these phenomena in a strictly scientific manner. If, in observing certain phenomena, we substitute the words ‘purpose’ or ‘intention’ for knowledge of the laws governing them, we do not advance beyond recording the facts under observation; we add nothing to our real knowledge of these processes. There is, therefore, no question of obscuring differences between the various phenomena of memory; deliberate recollection, for instance, involving intention or an effort of will, and learning by rote, are clearly two very different things. It would be a perversion of Pavlov’s teaching to reduce memory to mechanical memory; but, with the aid of Pavlov’s theories it is possible to make clear, from a physiological point of view, what are the real differences between the several forms of recollection or representation.]
